Macfrut Innovation Awards 2016

A virus-resistant tomato, the first "piel de sapo" mini melon, a growth regulator that can improve the colour of table grapes, ozone-based storage systems, sorting machines capable of "looking" inside fruit, innovative packaging and modular wooden displays. These are just some of the new products that received an award at the 2016 edition of the Macfrut Innovation Awards, a prize awarded by L’Informatore Agrario and Macfrut after selecting the most interesting innovations on display throughout the event. A total of 28 medals were awarded (7 gold, 9 silver and 12 bronze), as well as 9 honourable mentions to products outside of the 7 product categories listed in the Regulations.

The awards ceremony is scheduled for Friday 16 September (Macfrut Innovation Hall, 10.30am) in the presence of the President of Cesena Fiera, Renzo Piraccini, and Antonio Boschetti, Editor-in-chief of L’Informatore Agrario.

Antonio Boschetti, Editor-in-chief of L'Informatore Agrario, commented, "The Macfrut Innovation Awards reward the value of innovation in terms of functionality, use, technical design, environmental impact and product quality. The many applications are a clear sign that this sector is buzzing and focuses on innovation as a drive for growth. This year, for the first time awards were also made to some innovations concerning processed products, a segment with high added value.”

Renzo Piraccini remarked, "The innovations awarded at Macfrut highlight two key aspects: the leadership of Italian companies in terms of innovation, and the sector's growing focus on environmental sustainability and consumer needs."

In fact, the innovations that are heading in this direction include: an atomiser equipped with a system that reduces the drift in plant protection treatments (M-612 Multi-Flow), a between-row weeding machine for the mechanical control of weeds (Rotosark), a system that selects blueberries according to the quality of the skin and flesh (Blueberry Vision Unitec Technology) and an electrohydraulic device for the automatic control of the correct working depth (TDC), the best soil preparation and fuel reduction. The key word remains sustainability, aimed at cutting costs and, above all, respecting the environment and wholesomeness of produce, starting with plant protection products and fertilisers (the gold medal in the 3logy category was won by the fungicide made with 3 new active ingredients  - terpenes - exempt from maximum residue limits), as well as wrapping and packaging, with new packaging solutions that consume 35% less raw materials and are 100% recyclable (Sormabag). With regard to fruit and vegetable varieties, there is ongoing research into increasingly appealing products for consumers, based on colour and size, as well as consistency and versatility in cooking. Attention to flavour and food trends is found even among the honourable mentions, including gluten-free and ready-to-eat vegan products - vegetable burgers made with quinoa (Burger'Z). Special attention is also given to intolerances, for example, gluten-free products or products with no added sugar, no artificial colourings and low in calories, such as dehydrated fruit flesh and nuts (Mister Nut Wellness) and milk-free mashed potatoes. Not to mention, genuineness but also traceability: a bronze medal was awarded to an App (SiroApp) that allows a product production process to be traced through a QR code, whereas an honourable mention was awarded to the “Verdure di Romagna”, seasonal vegetables of the Romagna region grown by agricultural firms specialising in environmental protection, biodiversity and the seasonality of produce harvested and packaged on the same day.

With a total of 14 awards, Emilia-Romagna was the most awarded region in Italy, followed by Lombardy (9) and Piedmont (5). In the "Facilities and equipment for protected crops" category, French companies ranked first and second, thus proving the international value of Macfrut.
