Macfrut makes its debut in Kenya

Cesena – Macfrut made a debut presentation in Kenya. Last Monday, the 2017 edition of the fruit and vegetable trade fair was presented at the Ole Sereni Hotel in Nairobi. The event, promoted by AFFA (Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Authority), was attended by numerous traders and organisations representing the fruit and vegetable sector. The Macfrut delegation comprised President Renzo Piraccini, Cecilia Marzocchi, of the Cesena Fiera international office, and Enrico Turoni, President of Cermac.

In 2016, fifteen Kenyan companies participated as exhibitors at Macfrut and, given the positive outcome - many of them have found new customers in Europe - the 2017 edition is expected to attract an even larger number of industry professionals.

Kenya is a major producer of vegetables (green beans and mini vegetables) and fruit (mango, avocado, passion fruit and pineapple), and the sector is growing considerably, with a focus on both domestic consumption and exports.
With the development of modern distribution – the retailers present in Kenya are Carrefour, Walmart and three local chains – the country is also becoming a market for imported goods, especially apples and kiwifruit.

In addition to major exporters - efficient, organised and equipped with cutting-edge technology and their own packing houses - small and medium exporters are growing, supported by AFFA, which acts as a proper service provider. AFFA has built seven packaging and storage centres serving exporters in the major production areas in the country and near the Nairobi airport for air freight, where all companies, with their own staff, process their own goods. In these facilities there is a great need for small packaging lines in order to standardise quality levels.
