Macfrut, presentation in Sudan

Cesena – The second presentation of Macfrut has been held in Africa, this time in Sudan, in the capital city Khartoum and in northern Sudan, in Merowe. This was the outcome of the mission: there are excellent preconditions for the fruit and vegetable sector to develop extensively in this country, as well as countless opportunities for Italian companies in the supply chain in terms of technology and fruit and vegetable exports and imports.

The presentation of Macfrut 2017 took place at the headquarters of Zadna International Co. for Investment, a government body that promotes the development of the fruit and vegetable sector through services and the distribution of fruit tree seedlings (dates and mango are the most popular) to individuals. During the event, Renzo Piraccini, President of Macfrut, and Cecilia Marzocchi, of the Cesena Fiera international office, met the top management of Zadna, representatives of the Ministry of Agriculture and of the Ministry of Commerce, and about 40 traders and private investors who have already confirmed their participation next May.

The tour then continued in the new development region in northern Sudan and in the production region of Marawi, where new projects are being developed and fruit is produced (in particular, dates, mango, oranges and grapefruits). This region is also known for its large dam situated on the river Nile, which has been operating since 2011 and, in the next few years, will allow the irrigation of 2.2 million hectares of land.

The agricultural development project headed by Zadna will involve substantial investments over the next three years, including the construction of 20 plants throughout the country for packaging and exporting. The first of these plants is currently under construction and requires the necessary systems and technology. Hence, great opportunities lie ahead for Italian companies in the supply chain, especially for logistics.
Another interesting aspect is that Sudan also imports fruit and vegetables, in fact there is a demand for apples, grapes, kiwifruit and frozen strawberries. During the mission, President Piraccini met the head of the association comprising approximately 30 importers who have already confirmed that they will be present at the next edition of Macfrut, which offers producers and exporters the opportunity to gather and establish new trade relations.
