Macfrut makes its debut in Zambia

Cesena (30 January 2018) – On 29 and 30 January, the trade fair organiser held a tour to present Macfrut 2018 in Zambia, where the fruit and vegetable sector is undergoing significant development. With a surface area of 752,000 square kilometres, equal to 2.5 times the size of Italy, a population of 17 million people and copper mines as the main economic resource, Zambia is transitioning from extensive agriculture (mostly maize) - along with cattle breeding - to intensive agriculture. Many farmers have started growing horticultural crops, especially tomatoes and peppers, as well as various types of tropical fruit for the local and regional market.

In 2017, a group of 16 companies - 15 from Zambia and one from Malawi - attended Macfrut, showing great interest and with excellent results.

The Italian delegation - comprising Renzo Piraccini, President of Cesena Fiera, and Enrico Turoni, President of Consorzio Cermac, along with Italian Ambassador to Zambia Filippo Scammacca Del Murgo - introduced the trade fair's forthcoming edition to the numerous sector professionals who had come to the ambassador’s residence. Macfrut was also presented to the board of the Zambian Farmers Union and to the media in a press conference attended by Minister of Agriculture Dora Siliya.

‘We were literally overwhelmed by the enthusiasm and hospitality of the Zambian farmers, who informed us that we can expect many more of them to participate in the next edition of Macfrut with a national stand,’ Renzo Piraccini commented. ‘As a result, we must thank Ambassador Scammacca, who has given us great support.’

‘In Zambia, the fruit and vegetable sector is growing at a fast rate and this should bring excellent opportunities for Italian technology companies,’ said Enrico Turoni.

On this same occasion, the activities of the Zambia Women in Agriculture Cooperative Society were officially inaugurated. The Society was launched by the women who participated in Macfrut 2017, who met there for the first time and then decided to form a cooperative.

The tour will end with visits to fruit and vegetable companies in central and northern Zambia.
