Macfrut 2021: a 1,000-square-metre test field on innovation

From 7 to 9 September at the trade fair, the Macfrut Field Solution area will host field tests focusing on innovation and sustainability

Cesena (21 July 2021) – Innovation and sustainability are the two key words that are shaping the so-called Agriculture 4.0. Although these two terms may not always lead in the same direction, they certainly will during the three days of Macfrut, the international trade fair for the fruit and vegetable sector, from 7 to 9 September at the Rimini Expo Centre.

The exhibition halls will feature a real demonstration field covering more than 1,000 square metres (Macfrut Field Solution), where farmers and technicians will be able to see cutting-edge machines and equipment in operation.

‘Today, competitiveness is the watchword, understood from a social, environmental and economic perspective,’ explains Luciano Trentini, coordinator of the dynamic areas at the trade fair. ‘These three perspectives will be covered in the Field Solution area which, for several years now, has been set up at the Macfrut trade fair to showcase machines and equipment capable of addressing the challenges that the fruit and vegetable sector faces with regard to business and production processes.’
The Macfrut Field Solution area is being organised in collaboration with Cermac, the Consortium for the internationalisation of Italian manufacturers of machinery, equipment, technologies and accessories for agriculture and agro-industry. ‘Italy is a world leader in the field of technological innovations in agriculture, especially in the fruit and vegetable sector,’ says Enrico Turoni, president of Cermac. ‘The test field that will be set up at the trade fair will provide a great opportunity to showcase all the latest technological innovations and present them to professionals in the industry. The collaboration with Macfrut is of strategic importance for Cermac: in fact, over the last few years, by teaming up with the trade fair to promote it abroad, we have had the chance to present the technologies developed by our members in several foreign markets. For Italian businesses, Macfrut is not only a three-day trade fair, but also a means of promoting themselves all year round.’

Machines on display at the trade fair will include electric asparagus harvesters, ensuring up to 50% savings in labour costs, which is essential since finding workers is becoming increasingly difficult due to the current health emergency. Moreover, electric motor traction significantly reduces environmental and noise pollution, especially when this kind of operation takes place in a greenhouse.

Speaking of green machinery, it will also be possible to see electronic seeders in operation, which can plant out different types of seeds (both large and small) on bare soil or on soil mulched with conventional or biodegradable films. These new mulching materials, which are biodegradable (whole, perforated or micro-perforated), do not need to be collected and disposed of; in fact, they can be easily buried as they degrade rather quickly.

Fungal diseases are among the issues affecting pear production in Italy, and plant health problems are what often make fruits unsuitable for sale. At the test field, visitors will learn how heat – if used correctly – can reduce fungal inoculum in the soil and, as a result, the damage caused at low costs, thus saving on plant protection treatments, which are often not sufficient on their own to solve the problem.

To conclude, weeders for leafy crops to be marketed as fresh-cut produce will also be on display, which are able to operate continuously in a row starting from just 4.5 cm between crop rows, thereby reducing the amount of grassing by more than 70%.

These are just some of the highlights of the Field Solution 2021 area. In addition, the test field will host the exhibitors of the International Asparagus Days event, which is entirely dedicated to asparagus and will feature several demonstration activities.
