Spices & Herbs Global Expo: partnership Macfrut – Cannamela

An exhibition dedicated to spices, a unique event in Europe. Macfrut has partnered with Cannamela, a leading company in the field. Spice market up 13.4% in volume.

Cesena/Bologna (15 February 2022) – The Spices & Herbs Global Expo, the exhibition dedicated to the world of spices, officinal herbs and aromatic herbs, will make its debut at Macfrut 2022 (4-6 May at the Rimini Expo Centre). This unique event in the European trade fair industry consists of an exhibition area with professionals from all over the world, business meetings with international buyers, technical workshops with industry experts, and product testing during dedicated show cooking sessions.

The spice and aromatic herb industry will play a key role at the Spices & Herbs Global Expo, and will be represented at the exhibition by Macfrut's new partner, Cannamela, a leader in this market. Founded in 1956 in Bologna by a family of the same name, the company is now part of the Italian group Gruppo Montenegro, which has enabled it to maintain a specialist approach to this product category while investing in innovation, communication and technological development.
Roberto Pernozzoli, Purchasing Manager of Gruppo Montenegro, explains the reason behind this partnership: ‘We instantly felt in tune with this project organised by Macfrut, since one of Cannamela’s distinguishing features is that it has always had complete control over the entire production process, starting with the purchase of raw materials, which are sourced directly from the countries that produce them, selecting the best crops from all around the world. This has been possible thanks to our longstanding partnerships with small and medium-sized producers, with the aim to jointly implement a sustainable development project. Having a B2B exhibition in Italy that gathers and brings together international and Italian sector professionals is extremely important for the spice and herb industry too, since it allows different experiences and knowledge to be combined and pooled, encouraging discussions in order to create new opportunities that would have been unthinkable until just a few years ago’.

The spice market has been booming in recent years, to the point of achieving double-digit growth, as Fausta Fiumi, Marketing & New Business Director Food at Gruppo Montenegro, points out: ‘Macfrut made an important move by deciding to organise an event focusing on Spices and Herbs, since this sector has been flourishing for several years now, and there are many reasons for this. On the one hand, cooking in general – specifically cookery and cooking expertise – has become popular, setting a trend that grew even further during the pandemic due to the fact that more people started eating meals at home, and is still going strong. In fact, compared to 2019, the last calendar year before Covid, the 2021 trend was very positive (+13.4%, total retail sales data, Source: Nielsen Market Track Year ending on 02/01/22). On the other hand, Italians are becoming more and more interested in trying recipes “from all around the world” or even just in adding an international touch to everyday dishes (Source: Mintel- Attitudes Towards Cuisines - Europe - 2021). Last but not least, we should also mention the fact that an increasing number of health benefits are being attributed to spices, not only because they are good substitutes for salt, but also due to their intrinsic properties, which are well known to most people (think of turmeric, ginger and cinnamon, for instance), which makes these ingredients well suited to today’s eating habits’.

And speaking of eating habits, one of the topics that will be covered at the trade fair, thanks to Macfrut’s partnership with Cannamela, is that of sustainability: from organic crops to local produce and fair trade certifications. These segments continued to grow in 2021, and this positive trend has been going on for several years now: in fact, Italians tend to link sustainability and nutrition – and this happens across all age groups, regardless of income or family circumstances – which is why consumers tend to choose products that provide assurance that consumer values are adhered to (Source: H&W AlixPartners Research).

At an international conference to be held during the three-day trade fair, Cannamela’s experts will talk about quality and other aspects related to this industry, and will also host a show cooking session, which will focus in particular on recipes and tastings.
